Plans to build a house in Bagley have been turned down by Sedgemoor District Council.

An outline planning application with all matters reserved, for the building of a dwelling on land to the west of 8 Snake Lane, Bagley, had been submitted by Mr and Mrs Bryne.

The site of the proposed home was on the south side of the road and immediately to the west of a row of eight semi-detached former council houses.

The plan was to build a modest two-storey dwelling on the plot, which would provide housing that would help reduce pressure on house prices and housing stock in the area.

However, Sedgemoor disagreed and the planning officer's report said: "The application site is located outside the established development boundaries of any designated settlement and is within the open countryside, remote from services and facilities, where development is strictly controlled.

"The proposal is located in Bagley which is a very modest-sized settlement defined by its very low number of dwellings laid out in a loosely knit and sporadic pattern of development.

"It is not a settlement with a clearly defined nucleus of existing dwellings, nor would the proposal result in the infilling of an existing main built up area.

"The erection of a new dwelling in this location would constitute ribbon development which is harmful to the character and appearance of the settlement, undermining its dispersed pattern of development and hence does not positively respond to and reinforce local context, character and distinctiveness of place."
