A flood alert has been issued for the Cheddar Yeo river for tonight (February 14) and tomorrow as Storm Dennis moves in.

The Environment Agency has issued the Be Prepared flood alert as flooding is possible for rivers including the Congresbury Yeo, Cheddar Yeo, Axe and tributaries.

River levels in the area have fallen back to normal winter levels. However, a continuous band of rain is forecast this afternoon and evening.

This will be closely followed by Storm Dennis on Saturday morning, bringing widespread heavy rain through Saturday, into Sunday.

Consequently the river levels are forecast to rise again tonight into the early hours of Saturday. This will bring a risk of flooding to low lying land and roads overnight into tomorrow, including roads at Wrington and Iwood, and potential overtopping of the bank downstream of Mendip Mills Weir.

An agency spokesperson said: "Our operations teams are checking and clearing bridge openings, culverts and debris screens.

"Our incident response staff are monitoring the developing situation closely. Please stay aware in case further warnings are issued."
