The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership is urging people to take extra care and respect the community in Cheddar when spending time outdoors, after the Government issued new guidance on access to the countryside during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
The partnership is asking people to:
Think carefully before deciding to come to the Mendip Hills.
Remember that all attractions, pubs, cafes, toilets and shops are shut.
Understand that this is a living, working area and that there is a need to respect farming and local communities.
Keep strictly to social distancing guidance and avoid walking near farm buildings and homes where possible.
Not stay overnight on open access land or in visitor car parks.
Jim Hardcastle, manager of the Mendip Hills AONB, said: "While we appreciate the physical and mental health benefits of exercising in outstanding landscapes, we would ask people to think before they choose to visit and be respectful of the needs and concerns of local communities.
"Please consider the potential impact of any visit on local people and services, and make sure that wherever you choose to spend time outdoors, you do so carefully and respectfully, and while observing strict social distancing and thorough hygiene measures.
"If you do head for popular visitor areas like Cheddar Gorge or Burrington Combe please don't be surprised to find limited car parking spaces."
Mr Hardcastle recently praised visitors to the Mendip Hills for their behaviour, but is now reminding everyone to follow the Corona Countryside Code:
Stay at least two metres from others.
Avoid touching shared surfaces.
Leave gates as you find them.
Clean your hands regularly.
Keep dogs under close control.
Take your litter and dog poo home.
