A group from Cheddar is looking for views and support for its plans to build a pump track in the village.

Ride Mendips wants to gather people's opinions on the project, and is running a survey so residents can have their say.

A pump track is a circuit of banked turns and features designed to be ridden completely by riders "pumping" - generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing.

Ride Mendips and Cheddar Parish Council are seeking funding from the British Cycling Places to Ride fund to contribute towards the new pump track facility to be built next to the skatepark by Cheddar Reservoir.

The group believes that this will be a valuable addition to sporting facilities in the village, and a fantastic opportunity to promote well-being through healthy outdoor activity among local residents and the wider community.

Ultimately, Ride Mendips wants to encourage increased use of the site for everyone regardless of gender, age, ability or ethnicity and develop a stronger community.

The group would be grateful if local residents would spend a few minutes completing a survey, which would provide valuable information in support of its funding bid.

Ride Mendips is a registered charity run by a team of local mountain bikers. It aims to channel the collective weight of the local mountain biking community to promote their interests across the Mendip Hills and surrounding areas.

Its objectives are to protect existing, and pursue the opening of new, rights of way for mountain bikers; construct and maintain sustainable mountain bike specific trails to a high standard; act as an information and communication point for local mountain bikers; promote a code of conduct among the mountain biking community; and promote the importance of mountain biking to other user groups and/or organisations.

Chairman Grant Garge told Cheddar Nub News: "Although we have already secured more than £30,000 in funding, our application to the British Cycling Places to Ride Fund is crucial to the success of the project.

"Gathering proof of need and community support will significantly improve our chances of a successful bid.

"Therefore, I would ask all local residents who wish to see the project go ahead to complete the survey found on our website.
