The Kings Academy, Cheddar, 2020 school production of 42nd Street wow-ed sold out audiences last week with an all singing, all (tap!) dancing spectacle.

The show began with earnest Peggy Sawyer (Olivia Dilly/Erin Hemms), trying her best to make it in to the chorus of her first Broadway show Pretty Lady, under revered director, Julian Marsh (Harvey Godwin).

She is quickly spotted by young Billy Lawlor (Joe Thomas), a fresh faced but experienced performer, who fights her corner for a spot in the show.

Star of the show, Dorothy Brock (Tyler Stanley/Shannon Tolton) gave an excellent performance as a Broadway diva, supported by the optimistic Pat Denning (Tom Walsh).

The show's wealthy backer, Abner Dillon (Ewan Foster) kept us laughing with his strong Texan accent and one-liners.

Maggie Jones (Ellie Smith) and Bertie Barry (Ellie Bradford) provided more comic relief as the writers of Pretty Lady, with their quick witted remarks and dramatic reactions.

The principle characters were supremely confident and all gave a thoroughly polished performance.

Within the supporting cast, stand out voices were that of Annie (Tabitha Fuller) and Lorraine (Aimee Wilson), supported by the dramatic and comical performances of Phyllis (Hali Crandon) and Winnie (Abbie Stephens).

They were accompanied by some talented featured dancers in the form of Orla Agnew and Matthew Thompson.

Act 2 begins with a firm musical favourite - We're in the Money - in which the ensemble burst on to the stage in a flurry of gold and black, proving that anyone can tap dance with enough rehearsal.

The show included many vibrant and energetic musical numbers, closing with the stunning Forty Second Street, a high energy tap number.

This number was the cherry on top, with all cast involved, demonstrating synchronised steps, paired with beaming faces and sparkling costumes.

Sound and lighting was provided by the Kings of Wessex student tech team, MJ Pro Lighting and Sound, and assistance from Phil Butterworth.

All areas of production were slick and well managed - a huge hats off to the students who made it happen.
