Plans to knock down part of a former discount shop in Cheddar Gorge and create a new cafe in its place, have been withdrawn.

A planning application to determine if prior approval is required for the proposed demolition of the former AJ's Discount Superstore building in Cheddar Gorge, The Cliffs, Cheddar, had been submitted to Sedgemoor District Council by Mr Andrews.

The property, which is next to Frank's Restaurant, comprises three sections, from east to west being the tallest single-storey pitched roof facing The Bays, then a single-storey pitched roof centre section with slightly lower ridge and eaves line, and finally a single-storey rear profiled metal sheet lean-to roof.

The proposal was to demolish the eastern section to create a courtyard in front of the retained centre and rear section as a tea room/cafe with the courtyard walls lowered and capped to the east and south, to provide customers with a view up the Gorge and down the stream from external and internal tables/chairs.

The application said the existing eastern section roof trusses have fractured and failed, and are in imminent danger of collapse, but the application has now been withdrawn.
