Revised plans for nearly 100 new homes in Cheddar could be approved before the end of the year.

Sedgemoor District Council voted in July 2018 to grant Waddeton Park Ltd outline permission to build 96 homes on the Round Oak Farm site east of the A371 Upper New Road in Cheddar.

Taylor Wimpey Bristol has now bought up the site and has submitted amended plans for the same number of homes. The council is expected to make a decision on this new application before Christmas.

The developer is already advertising the site on its official website as Oak Park, with homes ranging from one to four-bedroom in size.

A spokesman said: "The application includes the provision of 30 per cent affordable homes, ensuring that local people are able to live and work in the local area.

"The land is accessed from Upper New Road and is surrounded by countryside giving this development a lovely outlook for its mixed range of homes including one, two, three and four-bedroom homes.

"This is in the form of maisonettes, terraces, semi-detached and detached homes with on-plot parking."

The majority of the new homes will be delivered at the eastern edge of the site, with three attenuation ponds being constructed either side of Holwell Rye, which runs through the site.

Access from the new homes will be via the A371, with pedestrian access being provided from Round Oak Road and emergency vehicles having an additional access from the B3135 Axbridge Road.

The council's development committee voted to grant outline permission for the site in July 2018 - however, it took until May 2020 for legal agreements between the council and the original developer to be signed.

As part of this delayed agreement, Taylor Wimpey has committed to setting part of the site apart for a "species-rich meadow", as well as making financial contributions towards new footpaths and cycle links to and from the site.

It also committed that at least 50 per cent construction staff on the new development would be sourced from Cheddar and the surrounding area.
