The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for rivers in and around Cheddar in the wake of Storm Jorge.

The Be Prepared warning from the agency says flooding is possible today (February 29) for rivers including the Congresbury Yeo, Cheddar Yeo, Axe and tributaries.

River levels have risen at the Iwood river gauge as a result of heavy overnight rainfall. The agency believes there is a possibility of flooding for roads at Wrington and Iwood.

An agency spokesperson said: "Overtopping of the bank downstream of Mendip Mills Weir is forecast.

"We expect river levels to remain high throughout Saturday and we are closely monitoring the situation.

"The forecast is for a largely dry day on Saturday, with scattered wintry showers. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."
