Three crews tackle property fire in Mark
Three crews were called to a fire at a home in Mark yesterday morning (May 25).
At around 11am, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control received a call from a passer-by reporting a property fire in Mark Causeway.
The passer-by had been flagged down by the resident of the property involved in the fire. They were able to confirm the fire was involving a mattress within a bedroom and that all persons were free and clear of the danger.
Two fire engines from our Burnham-on-Sea fire station along with a third fire engine from Bridgwater were mobilised immediately.
On arrival crews confirmed the property to be fully smoke logged and crews set to work with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and two main jets.
By 11.30am, the number of breathing apparatus wearers had been increased to four firefighters, and the fire crews requested an ambulance for a female casualty suffering smoke inhalation and minor burns.
By noon, crews confirmed that an ambulance was in attendance and assessing the casualty, and also that the fire had been extinguished and natural ventilation of the property was taking place.
The property sustained 100 per cent fire damage to the bedroom where the fire originated, and 100 per cent smoke damage to the remainder of the property.
The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental but fire investigators remained on the scene for some time carrying out further investigations.
A spokesperson for Burnham-on-Sea Fire Station said: "By comparing the two internal photos it's clear to see that closing doors in your property can help save lives by containing the fire and protecting your escape route.
"This will give you and your family valuable time, especially when you go to bed. Remember, smoke alarms save lives."
