An interactive map has revealed who is the most searched-for person on Wikipedia from Axbridge.

The Pudding has created a people map of the UK, replacing place names with their 'most Wikipedia-ed' resident.

This person could be someone who was born in, lived or has connections to the place. Cheddar is not included in the map, but Axbridge is.

Drumroll please...

According to the map, Axbridge's most Wikipedia'ed person is Maurice Vidal Portman.

Maurice Vidal Portman (March 21 1860 to February 14 1935) was a British naval officer, who is best known for documenting several Andamanese tribes between 1879 and 1901 when he was posted as a superintendent of the Andaman Island Penal Colony.

After retiring as an invalid in 1901, he went back to Britain where he did some journalism and "some valuable Secret Service work" during the First World War. He lived in Axbridge at the time of his death.

In July 1879 he was stationed at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands and made Officer in Charge of the Andamanese, a post which he held for more than 20 years.

Portman also composed a significant collection of ethnographic objects during his time on the Andaman Islands that are now in the collections of the British Museum.
