The first parkrun in Cheddar took place yesterday (September 4) with 61 runners taking part to try out the new course for the first time.
The launch of the Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun had been delayed by Covid since mid-2020.
The route goes around the edge of the playing fields, through a short piece of woodland and then for about 2km of out-and-back running on the fast and flat Strawberry Line.
At half way there is a short section back on the playing fields and through the wood again, before embarking on another 2km loop and returning to the finish by the new community pavilion.
All the volunteer roles were filled - even the "nice to haves" - so the organisers would like to say a big thank you to all those who made the event happen.
The results from this first run can be seen at the results page here and please scroll through the 10 photos at the top of this article, kindly provided by the parkrun, to get a taste of what the event is about.
Parkrun is widely praised for its innovative approach and the strides it has made in opening up running as an inclusive sport for all levels.
There are nearly 600 5k parkrun events in England alone, with an average attendance of 263 walkers and runners, and more than three million people registered to take part.
The fastest finisher at the Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun and therefore also the course record holder was Neil Golding who recorded a time of 18:31.
The female record is held by Amber Gascoigne who recorded a time of 18:43. For six people this was their first ever parkrun.
The event could not have happened without the fabulous volunteers though, so many thanks are due to the hi viz heroes: Adele PARSONS * Amy PALMER * Andrea KAY * Andrew CHAMBERLAIN * Andy MCGOVARIN * Anne BARON * Caroline CRADDOCK * Caroline HOBBS * Dan J LLOYD * David BRYANT * Edric HOBBS * Elizabeth C LLOYD * Jackie EVANS * Jayne CUMNER * Jill SANDIFORD * John ENGLISH * Kirkland PURNELL * Mark DEACON * Martin KAY * Rachel DUDMAN * Robert HOOPER * Roger TRUBRIDGE * Rose TUCKER * Stephen KAY * Zoe HUMBER
Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun event director Martin Kay said: "Why not join them for a future event?
"We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and look forward to seeing everyone, and maybe some others, again next week.
"Parkrun as a great volunteering opportunity as well as a chance to get fit and socialise - we have 25 volunteer slots to fill every week."
