Avon and Somerset Police have issued 15 warnings and seven penalty notices following a busy late May Bank Holiday weekend in Cheddar Gorge.

Many people came to the gorge for exercise, plus there was a car meet which saw up to 300 vehicle arrive.

While most people obeyed the social distancing and lockdown rules, the police have said they did have to take action against some people in the gorge.

Sergeant Joe Piscina said: "This weekend saw a large number of people travelling to Cheddar Gorge to exercise meaning the area was particularly busy.

"Officers were on patrol throughout the weekend engaging with the public and explaining the need to adhere to current guidelines around social distancing.

"The overwhelming majority of people were receptive to what they were told. However, 15 warnings were issued to people contravening the requirements.

"There were also occasions when drivers arrived at the gorge not for exercising and they were spoken to and many agreed to move on.

"On Sunday, however, there was a large car meet featuring approximately 200 to 300 vehicles. Due to the large volume of traffic in the area, our priority was to keep the public safe and encourage those drivers to move on.

"The vehicles involved, though, were filmed to allow us to review the footage subsequently and take action where necessary. Seven penalty notices were issued for driving offences at the scene.

"We've been clear both in the run up to this bank holiday and previously that we will not tolerate antisocial driving, especially in Cheddar Gorge.

"I would like to reassure the public who took the time to report the issues over the weekend that will be looking back at the recorded video from Sunday's car meet to identify those involved and will take retrospective action against anyone who breached regulations or committed offences."
