Avon and Somerset Police have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling antisocial driving after Cheddar Gorge reopened today (July 20).

The road through the gorge was closed at 3pm yesterday by the police and Somerset County Council following "nuisance vehicle use" and it only reopened earlier today.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We received reports of a planned car meet at Cheddar Gorge yesterday (Sunday July 19).

"Following consultation with Somerset County Council, it was agreed the road should be shut as a precaution.

"A number of motorists were subsequently turned away from the gorge. The road has now reopened.

"We remain committed to tackling problems around antisocial driving in the gorge."
