A former Weston Hospicecare nurse from Wedmore is getting ready to pedal some miles for her hospice in the Wedmore 40/30 and is encouraging all keen cyclists to join her.

Venetia Hopkins worked for the hospice as a nurse for more than a decade before retiring and becoming a volunteer.

As a keen cyclists she has backed her home fundraiser, the Wedmore 40/30, since it began in 2018. The event returns on Sunday July 11.

It supports Weston Hospicecare and St Mary's Church in Wedmore while giving cyclists a chance to ride a glorious 30, 40 or 70-mile route.

Participants will pass through some of Somerset's finest landmarks such as Cheddar Gorge, Blagdon Lake and the levels.

The 70-mile route is a combination of the 30 and 40-mile route with the Post and Wicket (Event HQ) serving as the halfway point, while there will also be a family-friendly 12-mile route too.

Venetia said: "I'm going to do the 30-mile route again (my third time).

"It has wonderful views over the moors and is on very few main roads. There is something for serious cyclists, families and those who just want a bit of fun.

"Most people understand the importance of a hospice and the kind of work it does supporting people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

"Weston Hospicecare covers a wide area and serves a very large community. Anyone at any time can find themselves in need of this sort of care to relief pain, suffering and stress at the hardest time of life.

"The ride covers routes that will be familiar to frequent longer distance cyclists but they have been put together imaginatively by local cycling enthusiasts.

"Both routes begin at the same place so there is the opportunity to recharge the batteries with sticky buns and energy drinks between the two rides.

"The 40 miles is for those with strong limbs and a competitive spirit. The 30 miles is beautiful and much gentler but still represents a significant achievement.

"If you're reading this thinking about taking part, just give it a go. It is a beautiful ride whichever route you challenge yourself to complete and it is for such a great cause."

Registration for the Wedmore 40/30 closes in early July and spaces are on a first come, first serve basis. To sign up, click here.
