Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey talks to personnel at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus

In his first visit to troops deployed overseas, the Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey visited troops stationed on the Sovereign Base Area (SBA) in Cyprus.

On a three-day visit, Mr Heappey - who is MP for the Wells Constituency which includes Cheddar - met with members of the UK Armed Forces deployed on a range of different missions as well as Cypriot Defence Minister Savvas Angelides.

A food festival might be held in Axbridge to tie in with the pageant

The idea has been put forward for street food at the Axbridge Pageant in August, to give local suppliers a chance to cater for the influx of visitors.

This was an idea floated at a recent Axbridge Chamber of Commerce networking meeting: with the pageant on August 29 to 31 this year, perhaps there could be a food festival – maybe street food – set up in the town over the weekend giving visitors more places to eat – and a chance of local suppliers to sell their food and drink.

Students from across the schools in the Wessex Learning Trust are in the process of completing final rehearsals before they take part in a 40th Anniversary Concert for the Cheddar Valley Music Club on Wednesday March 18, at 6.30pm.

The concert will see all the ensembles within the club (including Brass, Strings, Percussion, and Choirs) performing alongside past members in a celebration of the club's history and all that they have achieved, providing the opportunity for young people to make music.
